Council's offices in Military Road are now being heated by a woodchip boiler in a bid to tackle environmental issues.
The brand new installation will be using woodchip from Blean Woods at around 48 cubic meters per month.
Chief Executive Colin Carmichael said: “The installation of a woodchip boiler is one of the targets we set ourselves in our environment policy. We want to be a leading organisation in the use of renewable energy and show others how important it is to be environmentally friendly.
“Obviously we are entering a time of the year where we won’t need to use it that much, but we are very pleased it is now up and running and look forward to putting it through its paces properly later in the year.”
It has been estimated that the boiler will save the council around £4,000 a year in gas costs and also result in a grant from the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme of approximately £10,000 a year.
The project has cost around £112,000, including supply, installation, fuel delivery equipment and some building moderations, which means the council will have covered its costs in just eight years and will then effectively start making a profit.
